University at Albany – Episode #38

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

Site Scores:

Site Visual Information Code Overall
University at Albany 96 89 91 (276/300) 92% A-

Today’s Tip:

Always make sure when repurposing content it is reformatted for the new medium. Documents meant for print do not transfer directly to the web.  Changing content for the web requires you to cut it down by at least half, increase the use of bullets, consider scalability and connect to external sites and resources. Don’t be afraid to cut up the content either.  Headers give the users eyes direction and can even increase readership.

Texas A&M – Engineering – Episode #37

Thursday, January 22nd, 2009

Site Scores:

Site Visual Information Code Overall
Texas A&M – Engineering 97 85 96 (278/300) 92% A-

Today’s Tip:

Users will scroll if you give them an intensive. The old school mentality of all the important content needs to be above the fold no longer applies. As long as some of the content headers make it above the fold the user will understand there is more interesting content below. Resist the urge to place everything above the fold, your page will get cluttered quickly.

Kaplan University – Episode #36

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

Site Scores:

Site Visual Information Code Overall
Kaplan University 89 55 52 (196/300) 65% D

Today’s Tip:

Always make sure your content is accessible. That means if the user does not have javascript or flash they should still be able to get to the content or alternate content. I always recommend using progressive enhancement so accessibility is built in from the beginning and you build up from there. It is a lot easier and safer than creating a page that requires everything and then hack together an alternative view.

Regent University – Episode #35

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009

Site Scores:

Site Visual Information Code Overall
Regent University 91 93 89 (273/300) 91% A-

Today’s Tip:

When coding HTML make sure all “class” and “id” attribute values appropriately reflect the content they contain instead of their position or color on the page. This will not only help future developers maintain your code but also create a clear separation between the HTML (information architecture) from the CSS (design). So using “news-events” instead of “bottom-column-left”.
