Eastern Mennonite University – Episode #50

Today’s Tip:

Every form should have a submit button, you cannot guarantee that all users will have an “enter” key. Making your web page accessible means making no assumptions about the users computer setup. If they are on a mobile phone without an enter key there is no way to submit the form. If their assistive device focus’s on the field to enter text there might also be no way for them to submit the form.

Thanks for the very helpful review! Since you were curious about it, the StatCounter code was a one-week thing to find out how many people have Javascript disabled, which Google Analytics can’t tell us. The ga2.js.php sets a custom segment based on internal IP address, so for the on-campus profile we can see the proportion of students, faculty/staff, labs, guests, etc. who visit different areas of the site.

You’re totally right about the lack of a submit button on the search form! And the position-specific ID—shame on me! I knew better!

We did have a static picture for graceful flash degredation but because swfobject.js loads the flash movie a split-second later, the no-flash picture would appear briefly before the flash slideshow and it was pretty gross. Would be interested to know any brilliant ideas for solving this you or anyone else has. Probably a noscript tag would work, though that doesn’t solve the problem for people who have javascript, but their flash player is too old.
