Keep drop downs light, at most eight items should be a rule of thumb. 5-6 would be ideal but once the menu gets beyond eight it gets hard to scan and hard to navigate with a mouse.

I’m sorry – I just had to comment…man…I know you aren’t bashing the site here…but this was definitely a great entertainment piece as well as a technical/design one. The Weather Bug, The Insanely Long Menu, The Disappearing Sub Menu ‘Awesomeness.’ Could sound patronizing…but you’ve made the case for a redesign my friend.
