Breadcrumbs are not meant to be primary user navigation. Breadcrumbs are a trail of where you have been and meant to orient a visitor who landed on an interior page.

Woah, I really like their breadcrumbs. Our site used to have breadcrumbs a few years back, when we rebuilt in 2009, they didn’t come back. As you mentioned, since these are designed in to the look and feel, they seem waaaay more useful. Definitely putting that on my list of changes for this upcoming year. We have a bar separating our header from the rest of the content that would be a perfect home for breadcrumbs.
I actually see the YouTube full screen buttons on those videos in the sidebar (running old FireFox 5), but a lightbox is a good idea. We’ve got videos for each of our main 13 undergrad departments, I feel they’re a little small and have been thinking of ways to make a better viewing experience.
I know you said we only need one thing to ‘enter’, but I think my main criticism is that their font choices are pretty pedestrian. Having some better defined heading styles could help to make their content pop more. Also, their left nav menus really need some style improvements.
Lastly, I like that they are providing access to internal resources. We’ve got this JICS/Jenzabar portlet system that we’ve just got implemented on campus, and eveyones pushing me to take those internal resources OFF the .edu site and into that system. I worry about that becoming a negative user experience (how annoying, really!) to make them jump through more hoops to get at information/resources.
Well, that’s it! Great review as always, I look forward to these
